Hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin, which is also found in our nails and skin. It grows from hair follicles located in the dermis, the second layer of the skin. Hair growth is a cyclical process that consists of three stages: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
The anagen phase is the growth phase, where the hair actively grows. This phase can last anywhere from 2-7 years, depending on the individual's hair growth rate. The catagen phase is the transitional phase that lasts for around 2 weeks. During this phase, the hair stops growing, and the hair follicle starts to shrink. The telogen phase is the resting phase, where the hair is no longer growing and eventually falls out. This phase lasts for around 3-4 months, after which the cycle repeats.
The thickness, texture, and curl of hair are determined by several factors, including genetics, hormones, and environmental factors. The shape of the hair follicle, as well as the number of hair follicles present, determines the thickness and density of the hair. Hormones, such as androgens, can influence hair growth and texture. Androgens can cause the hair follicles to shrink, resulting in finer hair.
The different properties of hair, such as color and shine, are determined by the distribution of melanin in the hair shaft. Melanin is a pigment that gives hair its color. The amount and type of melanin present in hair can vary, resulting in different hair colors, from black to blonde.
Hair care products, such as shampoos and conditioners, work by changing the physical and chemical properties of the hair. Shampoos contain surfactants that help to remove dirt and oil from the hair. Conditioners work by coating the hair shaft, providing it with a protective layer and making it easier to manage.
